The Cooler Lumpur Festival returns for its fifth instalment and will host different agendas throughout the four days with the theme ‘Notes from the Future’ at its home ground Publika, Solaris Dutamas from 17 to 20 August 2017. The KL-centric festival that adopts specific themes each year, aims to offer a new perspective to its audience this year by exploring the social, political, technological, and cultural ideas of our present time and tell the story of our collective futures.
The festival this year will be a collaborative effort between creative media shop PopDigital, Green Future Malaysia created by the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology & Water for EXPO 2017, Astro Malaysia Holdings Berhad (Astro), and returning literary partner British Council Malaysia.
Among programs planned are ‘Episodes’ is a brand new platform exclusive to The Cooler Lumpur Festival Partnering with Astro. ‘Episodes’ aims to champion visual storytelling in all its formats – film, photography, animation, social media, and even e-gaming aspiring to bring talents together to spur growth in the industry through thought leadership, capacity building, content development, and nation building.
The festival also welcomes previous partners, BMW Malaysia, Goethe-Institut and the United States Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. BMW will continue to provide official festival cars and weigh in on the future of mobility and how technology has a part to play in shaping the auto-industry in line with the launching of BMW Shorties coming up soon. Both Goethe-Institut and the U.S. Embassy are providing their support by flying in renowned speakers and thinkers from their respective home countries. We also welcome back TBWA\Kuala Lumpur as a content partner.

The Food Fringe Festival

Feast your eyes (and appetite) at the Food Fringe Festival with delicacies prepared by migrant communities in Malaysia. The fringe festival serves food for thought to the table – does our makan culture bring us together or divide us? New to the fringe is an interactive installation aptly named Junk Food. F&B outlets at the Publika Shopping Gallery will be collectively contributing food waste to serve as compost to create an urban makeshift garden.
Cooler Lumpur Junior

Curated by Makchic, the festival will return with Cooler Lumpur Junior, an annual treat for the kids featuring storytelling sessions, comic drawing workshops, a play area on the festival grounds, and more.

Follow a series of conversations on the current state of journalism. Presenting both Malaysian and international journalists, the campus will explore issues and topics such as fake news, the role of social media, as well as the future of this field in the digital landscape.
The festival is free of charge and largely open to participants of all ages from all walks of life.
