An epitome of female empowerment and business with a heart, The Batik Boutique carries on its vision to help underprivileged women to create a sustainable income, especially with their first brick-and-mortar boutique right in the buzzing neighborhood of Desa Sri Hartamas.
The Batik Boutique is the brainchild of Amy Blair, from her friendship with Ana, a mother who was seeking for an extra income to support her family. Conversations flowed into an idea when Amy suggested using Ana’s skills to sew that led to a gifting enterprise whereby she transformed sourced batik fabric into artisanal gifts to sell to friends and family. The friendship between Amy and Ana has been the inspiration to take this humble collaboration forward which later propelled The Batik Boutique into a homegrown brand and now, a promising retail powerhouse right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Right now, Batik Boutique in partnership with Malaysian batik artists has over 150 artisans working for the brand and the number keeps increasing as Batik Boutique prides itself as a training center for sewing in low-income communities. Batik Boutique also has a studio which had been a versatile space for work and play – a temporary retail outlet, as well as space for fabric dyeing and batik workshops. In the light of this grand launch, Batik Boutique team hopes to expand their business as well as resume their studio operation solely as a creative hub to drive more ideas and innovations.
Since the inception, the Batik Boutique mainly focussed on producing unique gifts such as batik homewares and shopping tote bags from batik and eco-friendly textile. Championing a business with a conscience, Batik Boutique offers other local brands such as hand-poured candles by EJL Candlebar, solid cologne by Class Society, and Malaysian-themed puzzles by Loka are a few of the local brands showcased. Products from other social enterprises, including earrings, pouches, and scarves by Fugeelah and T-shirts by Projek57 have been curated for the boutique which offers customers variety of designs and products. Just imagine, with a single purchase of any item from Batik Boutique, a customer is not only changing the lives of these in-house seamstresses but also fuel the low-income communities affiliated to the boutique. It is true when they say it starts with a small gesture to make a huge impact on the underprivileged.
In the season of giving, do make your way down to The Batik Boutique for your last minute shopping needs as because there is something for everybody. If you are looking for something more unique, Batik Boutique also offers Batik workshops for group or events for a reasonable price. So, how does that sound for a perfect family activity over the holiday season with your young ones?
