Kuda-Kuda Merdeka exhibition by famed sculptor Mat Ali Mat Som debuted as a painter at his latest showcase last week at Art Row in Publika where he shared his story on his new journey.
His whole exhibit was a timely one as he revealed that his main subject matter, that is “kuda”, Malay for horses represents resilience and stability. He continued on touching on the current political climate ( post the 14th General Election) outcome, that strongly influenced his masterpieces at the exhibition. However, it is not as literal as that. Mat Ali’s paintings represent the silat movements, which explains the theme “kuda-kuda” that is a form of the Malay traditional martial art, silat.
